Week 5 & 6 Term 4

 KAYA,

Wow, what an incredible occasion Confirmation was! Most importantly it was a special team effort!

A massive shout out to the Confirmation candidates who made themselves and their families very proud on the night and of course to our AMAZING buddies who celebrated with us with reverence and respect every step of the way! Well done to the entire Year 6 group for their preparation and hard work in preparing for this sacrament; which included their Saint biography, Saint box and Oral presentation. The student's Saint boxes were wonderfully prepared and presented with a wealth of information. You will be able to view the marks of your child and pictures to support on Seesaw very soon.

Year 6 Cultural Incursion
The Year 6 students were very lucky to have a cultural incursion with the amazing Josh Whiteland from Koomal Dreaming.  The students had the wonderful experience of creating a journey stick for graduation. Josh, worked with the students all morning and taught them all about the six seasons and what it means to have, own and look after a journey stick. This journey stick symbolizes the journey the students have had from Primary school to High school. The students will use these sticks within the graduation ceremony and then they can take them home that afternoon.

Math Tutoring on Monday
A massive well done to all the students who attended Math's Club on Monday afternoons this year. The attendees are to be commended for their dedication and resilience to their learning and development in Math. The students  should be very proud of themselves, as I know that we, the Year 6 team, are definitely proud of their growth and change in mindset. Unfortunately we have made the decision to not run the tutoring sessions this term due to preparations for Graduation and the additional expectations at the end of term. We thank you in advance for understanding.

IMPORTANT - Graduation Preparation
Can you believe we are talking about Graduation? Wow! How time has flown!

Picture Request
Parents, we have a fun and nostalgic task for you. Can you please find and email me a photo of your child as a baby and/or toddler. We would like to create a PowerPoint for Graduation with these special photos. If you have any ripper photos from your child's time at OLC also, we would greatly appreciate any donations so please share. Please email them through by the end of week 6, so we can get onto this job as soon as we can.

A message from Mrs Meyer

Dear Year 6 Parents,

As the end of the year rapidly approaches, I wanted to share the plan for the Year 6 Graduation Day on Friday the 8th of December, so that you can make arrangements to attend the events. Parents, Grandparents and friends are invited to the following:
9.00am: Graduation mass commences at the church.
10.00am: Year 6 awards ceremony at the church.
11.00am: Parents return their child to school and share in a morning tea prepared by the Year 5 parents. RSVP for catering required please.
12.00pm: Whole school farewell assembly in the hall. I believe the formalities will conclude around 1.00pm. Students should wear their formal summer school uniform please.

For morning tea catering purposes, can you please advise via return email as to the number of adult guests who will attend from your family, including Grandparents? Please note that the morning tea provided will not be for siblings, just the graduates and their adult guests. Please reply with numbers ASAP to Mrs Meyer. We are looking forward to celebrating your child's journey at OLC as they take their next steps toward the future. We hope you can join us.

WEEK 5 & 6 - IMPORTANT LEARNING & INFORMATION

Technologies - Squashed Tomato Challenge
In Technologies this term the students have started to work on their Squashed Tomato Challenge which is the new topic for this term. This problem is a real-world problem that faces people in Nepal. The students are working in small groups to design and then create a solution to this problem. We will be testing these designs over class in week 5 and 6. Then evaluating our designs. The students will need to bring in the materials they will require to complete their designs to class for Week 5. This may include: string, cardboard, pieces of wood, wheels, etc. Depending on your child's design. 6M will require their materials on Monday and 6H will require their materials on Tuesday.

Novel Study
This term, unfortunately due to the time constraints with Confirmation and then Graduation preparation we will not have time to run a novel studies book club. Alternatively, we will do a thorough whole class book study of the amazing novel - Blueback by Tim Winton. This will involve exploring the novel as a class with a focus on the roles described below. At times, the students may have to take these roles home to finish as homework. We will complete the study of this novel with watching the amazing new movie of Blueback shot in Bremer Bay. This is a PG rated movie, so please indicate if you do not wish for child to view this movie or  if there is something that you are not comfortable about over email.

Homework Roles
At times, your child will need to complete the following roles as part of homework for their novel study.

The Summariser - will summarise one of the chapters that they read for the week. They will focus on the 'who, what, where, when and why' to help them retell the main events.

The Director - will compose four questions to discuss during the Book Club Meeting. These questions will use ideas from the novel, they most be open questions not closed. The director is also in charge of checking in with all students in their book club and hosting the book club on a Friday.

The Word Finder - will find a minimum of five interesting or unusual words from the text. They then use these words to complete a dictionary meaning, the sentence that the word was in and another sentence using the word in the same context.

The Illustrator - will create an illustration from a scene in the book. Their objective is to use as much detail and colour as possible so that their group members can pick the scene without reading the caption.

The Connector - will try and make a 'text to text', a 'text to self' and a 'text to world' connection from the required pages for that week. The most important part of making a connection is writing down how that connection helps you create a deeper understand of the novel. This could include a deeper understanding of the setting or the character's feelings.

Year 6 Gift
The Year 6 students will be fortunate to work with the amazing Jordanna Hall in Week 6 to create and design the Year 6 gift for 2023. This gift is a legacy that the Year 6 students leave behind for their school community to enjoy when they have departed. This year we will be focused on expanding the Aboriginal area at the back of the school to include an OLC Reconciliation Pathway. The students will design and paint a paver that will be placed into the ground. This paver will have a key message of Reconciliation. We will be working on a draft design this week and then on Wednesday from morning until lunchtime we will work on creating these unique pavers. This will be a beautiful legacy that the Year 6 team will leave behind.

Cricket Interschool

On Thursday 9th November, week 5, the Year 5 and 6 students will be participating in the SWPSA (Southwest Primary School Association) Interschool Cricket Carnival, which is being held at Bovell Oval in Busselton on from 9.30am to 2pm. Students will depart school at 8.40am and will return to school by 2.50pm. Please note, students may not arrive back at school before the school buses depart so you may need to make alternative arrangements for getting your child home. Parents who wish to pick up their child from Bovell Oval at the end of the day may do so if they have signed the permission slip below. Parents who pick up their children at the end of the carnival must see the teacher supervisor to get their child’s name ticked off the list. Students not picked up by their parents will be returned by bus back to school and dismissed at the end of the school day.

Students will need to be equipped with the following:

  • Food and drink for the entire day. (There are no canteen facilities available.)
  • Full OLC PE uniform. Please make sure all items are clearly labelled.
  • School hat and sunscreen as we will be outdoors for the entire day.
