Week 7&8 Term 2

 KAYA,

Wow, we cannot believe that we are heading into week 8, already! It was a very busy two weeks as you can see from the jam packed blog below, well done to the Year 5 and 6 students for their exceptional resilience, teamwork and effort that they put into Winter Carnival this week.

Red Cross Incursion:
Last week, the Year 6 students had Red Cross visit for an in school incursion. It was a brilliant learning experience and we are sure every student learned something new. There was some confronting issues discussed as well as some truthful and harsh facts about the struggles refugees and asylum seekers face. The students also had to do a difficult task where they had to step into the shoes of some fleeing their home. All the students participated beautifully and we would like to say a massive thank you to Red Cross for visiting our school. There will be a follow up activity that the students can complete at home, if it is completed the students will receive a humanitarian award that they can have for their CV for the future so watch this space.

Our Learning:
Writing: This week, we started to brainstorm and prepare for our persuasive writing task, our topic is "Children under 13 should be banned from social media". As a class we brainstormed both sides of the argument and then the students could choose which side they wanted to represent, either for or against the topic. The students came up with some amazing arguments and then they researched each argument to get relevant facts and statistics to back it up. Next week we will be using this key information to form our persuasive text. Please note, that throughout the research for this topic, we discussed as a class some sensitive class topics that describe the affect social media can have on a person, such as privacy breach, scams, explicit content, not knowing who friends online really are, cyber bullying, etc. This is to notify you in case your child would like to discuss these things further at home.

Math: This week, we have been working on finding fractions as division and converting fractions to percentages and decimals. The students will have two tracker book tests this week on both of these topics. The students can prepare for this using OneNote to study. The results will be available on Seesaw by the end of the week.

A note from Mrs Sinclair regarding OLC Cross Country:
Dear Parents,
Our school cross country is being held at school this Thursday 15th of June. All students from Year One to Six will be participating.
Year One races will commence at 9.15am and we anticipate the carnival will be finished by 11.00am. (The timeline may change depending on the weather).

Students will need to wear their sport uniforms with faction polos. They will require a change of clothing (including shoes, socks and a towel) in case the weather is inclement. Children may bring along coloured decorations (teddies, banners etc). They can wear coloured zinc, but must not colour their whole face, as this can get very messy!

Parents are welcome to attend and park in the top Naturaliste Road Car Park and in the Sloan Drive Staff Carpark behind the Year 4 classroom. Staff will be parking on the gravel carpark alongside the oval. This carpark will be closed to parents in the morning, as the competitors will run through the southern end of this carpark. Please do not park on private property opposite the school, the school side of Sloan Drive or in the Sloan Drive pick up lane as these areas will be part of the course for the older children.

We request that any spectators remain in the nature playground area. Thank you for your ongoing support.

A Note from Mrs Haines regarding Dance:
DANCE CONCERT- This upcoming Friday, 16TH June Week 8 Starting Time: 11AM
The theme for the Years 3 - 6 classes is Circus (only year 3 – 6 students are performing in the concert).
***If your child will be away on this day, please email ellie.haines@cewa.edu.au as soon as possible***
Please see class specific details on costumes that will be needed at school on Friday:

YEAR 6’S- CIRCUS PERFORMERS
The Year 6 students are dressing up as their own Circus character/performer.

I will be providing students with Circus accessories to wear, but they will need to bring their own ‘base’ clothing, either all black or bight coloured clothing- think Circus! (if has logos please wear inside out).
No shoes are required this year unless student requires them for their character.

If your child has any circus style costumes (can be dance/acro/gym costumes/leotards or clowns, animals, etc too!) they can bring it in to wear (please DO NOT buy anything new!).

Please feel free for your child to ‘go all out’ with hair and make-up for the show Friday, 16th June, please do hair/make-up before school (hair and make-up is NOT compulsory).

**TRISTAN, ALLIRA, MARLEY & JAY: Please wear long black pants/leggings and a plain black or white tee or button up shirt & black shoes/sneakers (I have a jacket and hat for them to wear)
If you have any questions, please feel free to email ellie.haines@cewa.edu.au

IMPORTANT: Minecraft Project Design and Presentation - Due this week
We have now got to stage where the master builder students will present their unique sustainable minecraft worlds to the class along with their presentation. Both Year 6 classes will present their worlds and presentation on this upcoming Tuesday. 6M will present at 11am - 12pm and 6H will present at 1.40pm - 2.40pm. During these presentations Mr Lee will attend to assist me with choosing the 5 groups that will represent OLC at the CEWA competition. This project will also be assessed for technologies.

IMPORTANT: Health Sport Project - Due Tuesday 13th June
The student have had their health project for three weeks to create and design an effective 30 minute sport lesson in pairs. The students had to include four essential components, including a warm-up, skills focus, game, and cool-down within their lesson design:

Section 1: Warm-Up (5 minutes) This section the students have to get their peers ready for physical activity with stretches, light jogging, and/or team-building activities. Emphasize the importance of warming up to prevent injuries and enhance performance.

Section 2: Skills Focus (10 minutes) They are to then select a specific skill relevant to the sport and break it down into manageable steps. Demonstrate each step, engage students in discussions, and provide hands-on practice in pairs. Offer feedback and corrections to support their learning.

Section 3: Game (10 minutes) Create a game/or use an already known game that incorporates the practiced skill, promotes teamwork, and friendly competition. Ensure the game aligns with the skill being taught.

Section 4: Cool-Down/Round Up (5 minutes) They are to then conclude the lesson with a light stretching session targeting the muscles used. Promote relaxation techniques and emphasize the importance of cooling down for recovery and injury prevention. Highlight the star participants for the lesson and award them with their certificates.

I have included a lesson example of my own on OneNote for the students to see and use to help them, however I have also placed a link to it in the blog below for you to see:

The students will get to teach these lessons to their peers throughout the remainder of the year on a Friday, what a fun way for them to showcase their Leadership skills once again๐Ÿ˜Š

Character Strengths:
Parents, this week we are looking at developing the character strength of Perserverance.
St Mary Mackillop was a trailblazer in her lifetime and paved the way for education of poor children in 19th century Australia. She also stood up for children and did not hesitate to ensure that justice was brought to those that would harm them.
When things get tough, do you keep on trying?
Do you finish what you start?
