Term 3 Week 5

KAYA and welcome to Week 5,

Last Friday, we celebrated our Feast Day and Mission Markets.  The Year 6 students were instrumental in the success of the day and the school was able to raise more than $2000 for Caritas to send to Ukraine. Well done OLC and the Year 6 team.

Learning this week
This past week in science we have been working on conductors, insulators and electrical circuits.  This culminated in us designing and completing a circuit to control an online game (in a coding program called scratch) using a MaKey Makey.  Keep an eye out for a Seesaw task over the coming days to see how your child went with this activity.
In Literacy, we are exploring persuasive devices such as emotive language, rhetorical questions and personal pronouns.  We will soon be writing our own persuasive texts using all the devices we have been studying.
In maths, we are working on decimals, having practiced rounding them last week.  We are exploring multiplication (this week) and division (next week) of decimals.

Book Week and Class Novel
After reading our class novel dealing with resilience and camp earlier in the term, we have now started "We Are Wolves" by Katrina Nannestad. This is a wonderful novel with a deep story set at the end of World War II.  It covers the themes of Growing up, Discovery, Belonging and Identity as well as Resilience. We will be reading and studying this book over the coming term.

Operation Christmas Child

It's that time of year that we participate in the 'Operation Christmas Child' shoe box initiative that has been a wonderful OLC tradition for many years and reflects our school value of Compassion so well. These shoe boxes are sent to underprivileged children throughout the world as a gift for Christmas.

The children will be placed into in groups of five and between them, they will fill a shoebox with a variety of items. The items do not need to be expensive. Each child in the group will be asked to cover the cost of sending the shoebox to its final destination. We ask them to bring in $2.50 each. The children will be given time in the classroom to pack the shoebox and explore some of the places that their shoe boxes may be travelling to.

Your child has been asked to bring in one of the following:
- Something to love
- Something to play with
- Something to draw with or write on
- Something for personal hygiene
- Something to wear
Please see your child's letter which they brought home last week with the item that they need to bring.

Here are the things that are NOT allowed in the shoe boxes:
Lollies; chocolate or food; fruit rolls or other fruit snacks; drink mixes (powdered or liquid); liquid paint; toothpaste; shampoo; aerosol cans; bubbles; crayons; plasticine/playdough; medicine; vitamins; used clothes; old toys; glass; porcelain; mirrors; war-related items; toy guns, knives; military figures; skull and crossbones; Halloween items; play money; playing cards; dominoes; tracts and Bibles (children are given an Operation Christmas Child evangelistic book at an outreach event).

Book Week 2022
We will be celebrating Book Week on Thursday the 25th August. Thanks to Mary-Lee Kemp and Julie Birch for organizing activities and books for each class. Students are invited (but not required) to dress up on this day. We will not be having a whole school assembly to share costumes, but classes are invited to share their dress ups with their buddy class, and if weather permits we may hold an outdoor parade. Please note we will have a sport lesson on this day so students will need to wear trainers too.
The theme for this years book week is "Dreaming with eyes open". Dreaming with Eyes Open is about stepping into your own story. It invokes thoughts of ancient times, and of listening to Country as the first storyteller. You can, of course, adapt it to your own dreams and future ambitions.

Cricket and AFL Sessions
On Thursday the 25th August SEDA College (South Bunbury) will be coming to OLC to run Cricket and AFL sessions with some of our classes. 6M will be taking part in this session with our buddy class in 2W . Because of this the students will need to ensure that their book week costume is also suitable to participate in the sport lesson.

Homework
Due: Friday 26th August

So we are back to the routine of homework. Over the next two terms you will see a steady increase in the students homework in order to help prepare them for high school. Please ensure this is getting completed. As preparation for highschool, we have increased our focus on homework.  As such, I will be in touch if your child does not present completed homework. This weeks homework includes:
  1. Reading - 40 minutes a night
  2. Time Tables - Division mash up (remember to use timestables to help)
  3. Math - 2x Banqer worksheets
You also may have noticed that your child may have brought home a Peace Poster to be completed. This is a competition that Lions International run and that we in Year 6 take part in. This project will also be part of your child's art grade so must be completed. The students have two weeks in class to get this completed then they must complete this at home for homework. Please reach out if you have any questions.

Thanks for your ongoing support
Mr Mc
