Week 6

KAYA and welcome to week 6,

This week will be a short week, with Friday being a pupil free day.

Last week, we spent some time exploring National Sorry Day  and coming up is National Reconciliation Week. The students have been completing activities and learning around these very important events for all Australians and the discussion we had on Friday in class while responding to an indigenous artist who is part of the stolen generation was incredible.

Rube Goldberg Machine
Last week the students began exploring energy and as part of this, I have set them all a challenge...to create and video a Rube Goldberg Machine.  The students have explored what these machines are and have watched a few video examples of what it could include (including from the beginning of The Goonies,  although I do not expect anything quite as elaborate or for them to modify their front door!)  This task is a homework challenge and as I have posted on the Seesaw activity, the video is due in week 8, so please support your child to take on this challenge.

Year 6 Camp
As we mentioned in last weeks blog, the Year 6 camp is back on in week 2 Term 3.  The students have had a look at the website for the camp and now have a little idea of what is involved and to expect.  The students bring home a camp form this week which will need to be completed and returned by the end of week 7.

Camp Homework:
This week the students will have to begin their Seesaw Camp homework. This weeks task will include setting and clearing the table from dinner every day. They will need to video one of the days on which they set and clear the table.  This will need to be uploaded to the seesaw activity. Please ensure you support your child in getting this done as it will be awesome preparation for what they will be expected to do on camp. If your child does this anyway it will be an easy task and fun to make the video.

Our Learning this week
This week we are continuing to write our Information Report on our Class Totem, the Jilla or Native Bee.  In maths we are moving into addition and subtraction of fractions with unlike denominators and fractions of a group.  In science we are looking at ways that we can produce electricity.

In Friendology, this week the students looked at healthy and unhealthy friendships that they have in their life. This lesson involved the students reflecting on those friendships in their lives and then evaluating how those friendships made them feel. The students created a mind-map of their friendship groups and then showcased the healthy and unhealthy relationships. The start of the lesson involved going over the four key friendship facts:
  1. No friendship (relationship) is perfect.
  2. Every friendship is different.
  3. Trust and Respect are the most important qualities of a friendship.
  4. Friendships change and that is okay.
Human Development
On Thursday, week 8 the students will participate in Human Development talks that will be presented by The Centre for Life, Marriage and Family. They will cover an introductory program on growth and development with the Year 6 students via zoom.

I will email parents whom I have not received the permission slip from.  Can you please ensure you reply to my email with your position on their attendance, otherwise we will assume your child is not participating and will be sent to another classroom.

This week we will be discussing safe places to find information on puberty including talking to family, talking to teachers, talking to health professionals, etc. If this is something you would also like to start discussing at home over the upcoming weeks, that would be supportive.

Beanies for Timor Leste
This Thursday the students are welcome to wear a Beanie for Timor Leste and bring a gold coin donation.  The money raised will go towards sending donated equipment to Timore Leste.

Thanks for your ongoing support

Mr Mc
