Week 7&8 Term 1 2023

KAYA,

Wow-wee.... what a busy two weeks we have had in Year 6 with two very short weeks for week 5 and 6. The students completed their IPI reading test with the teacher and had their last ever OLC swimming carnival at the Geographe Leisure Centre. πŸ˜”

Well done to our awesome Year 6 swimmers, everyone put in their best effort both as a leader and competing in the swimming (even Mr Lee could be spotted trying to perfect his freestyle)!

Our God moment this weekend was seeing all the incredible Year 6's and their parents come together today for a good cause and cleaned many many cars in the process!!! It proved to be a great success, raising much needed funds for the End of Year 6 festivities.

Well done all involved, what a super effort! πŸ™Œ

⭐⭐Star Citizen⭐⭐
Well done to James Hotait for receiving our first 6M Star Citizen Award for 2023.

Here is what we said...
James, the ‘Spirit of Jesus’ is truly alive within you! The accepting, caring and compassionate nature that you exude on a daily basis is living proof. You are a gentle soul who shows a genuine interest in everyone you interact with. The warmth you share through that gentle smile, positive outlook and thoughtful actions is something we cherish in our class. You’re  one of the first to say a bright good morning and will often thank us for the day as you leave. You know just the right time to cheer up a friend or help someone who is feeling a little sad and lonely. The empathy and concern you show towards others is second to none! You are an excellent role model living out the OLC value of ‘Compassion’. Well done James, it’s well-deserved!

Our Learning:
Seesaw - Please log in to your child's seesaw account so that you can start to see some of their assessments displayed. The first post included your child's reading test. You will be able to see the text they read, hear them read it and see their rubric and grading. Please let me know if you need a new login sent home this week.

Math - Over the past fortnight in math,  we have been looking at the relation of perimeter on area and vice versa. We have been working out if we change the perimeter does this then change the area of a shape and vice versa. Also, we have been learning the divisibility rules that will help us to quickly understand bigger numbers. Next week we will be looking at the surface area of 3D rectangular shapes and practicing our long division and multiplication (times tables are essential for this topic so please get practicing at home).

Writing - In writing over the last two weeks we have been looking at lots of different characters that we know. We look at how they have been described and how do we as a reader perceive the characters. We use the STEAL technique when helping to write and create our own characters. This includes looking at the characters:
S - Speech
T - Thoughts
E - Effect on others
A - Actions
L - Looks
We have looked at famous characters like Mrs Trunchbull, Shrek, the Big Bad Wolf. We have also explored the type of characters in a story - Antagonist and Protagonist. Ask your child to tell you the difference between the two?

Next week we will be looking at sizzling story starters and describing our setting using our 5 senses of sight, hear, touch, taste and smell. All of this work will then make our Expositions within our HOT tasks AMAZING!

Technology - In technology this week we revised the Engineering Design Process and discussed how it can be used in many forms. We explored how a design does not need to be perfect and therefore mistakes are going to matter as they will help us to get to the perfect end design. We then had a group project to use the engineering process to create the longest and strongest paper chain using specific items in 10minutes. At the end we then had to test our produce and revise and communicate our findings to the class. Well done to the teams who showed out of the box thinking and effective communication skills with their team.

The students have been given their end of term project for technologies they will need to use every step of the engineering design process to create a game. This game must be made using recycled materials and must be able to be played by their Year 2 buddy! Therefore, your child may ask to bring in some recycled materials from home over the next two weeks. The students will have the next 3 weeks to create this project this will include writing their project up using the engineering design process.

Health - In Health we have been learning about the importance of establishing 'Healthy Habits' as a child to reap the benefits of a long, happy and healthy life. We first investigated what a 'Preventative Health' is and why it is an important focus for the government. We have now placed a greater focus on our diet and the dietary requirements we need each day. The students have begun to look at the nutritional label on food products found within our cupboards and identify what each component is and how it affects us, the more or less we have of it!

In the coming weeks and over the holidays, the children will be challenged to choose a no-bake recipe from the website 'Taste'. They are to 'Clean Up' the recipe using healthier alternatives based on what they've learnt in our food label study. They then will need to create the recipe and film a little blog/video segment that is worthy of putting on a morning breakfast show such as Sunrise! It should be fun! I can't wait to taste what they come up with.

IMPORTANT - Year 6 Leavers Shirt 2023:
Please note that we are now collecting payment for the leavers shirts. The shirts are currently being printed and hopefully will be with us in the next couple of weeks, in order for your child to collect their shirt when it arrives payment needs to be made. The cost is $35 per shirt (please keep in mind if you ordered 2 to send in the extra money). We ask that you either send cash clearly labelled in an envelope to your class teacher or pay by eftpos at the office (Fran is aware that you may come in to do this). Well done to Emily Callaghan on completing the beautiful artwork on the back of the shirt.

IMPORTANT - Year 6 Parent Meetings Week 9:
Please note that you should have received a text message regarding the parent meetings held in week 9. You can use the below link to make a booking:
Please remember to log in using guest. If the times indicated do not suit you or our family please email me to book an alternative time. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to reach out. I look forward to seeing you all over the upcoming weeks.

Library:
Our apologies but we have not made it to the library in the past two weeks due to the shorter weeks. We will most definitely make it down this upcoming Thursday, please remind your child to bring their library bag with them to school.

Character Strengths:
Parents, this week we are looking at developing the character strength of Forgiveness. St Lawrence gave away everything from his church to those in need. When he was questioned about this, he was tortured and sentenced to the death. Even as he was in pain and dying, he was telling jokes and forgiving those that did him harm. Do you give people a second chance? Do you move on when others apologise?

Homework:
This fortnight, homework will include (due Friday 24th March):
  • Times table activity booklet - Weeks 7 & 8
  • Oral practice of the 8 times tables (try including division also)
  • Reading (30 minutes per day - to be logged in the student diary in the designated side section)
  • 1 x BANQER Activity - 'Careers and Employment'
Please ensure that your child writes their daily reading into their homework diaries and that it is signed once a week by an adult.
