Welcome to 6M 2022

KAYA and welcome to 6Mc in 2022!

I hope you have all had a relaxing and peaceful holiday and got to spend time with friends and family! I am looking forward to teaching your wonderful children and working with you throughout your child's learning journey this year.

I thought that it would be helpful if I gave you some information on the logistics of the first few weeks which may be handy in finalizing the last preparations for the students to come to school on Monday the 31st of January.

The Team - The Year 6 team this year consists of the My Self, Miss Hurst, Mrs Hayward and Mrs Peacock. We are all so excited to get started.

Day 1 – Is always busy and everyone (including me) is nervous about how the day will go. If you can make sure your child is at school as close to 8.30am as possible that would be great. We will be spending the day getting to know each other and getting organised for the upcoming busy year.  We will have dance on Monday, so please support your child by assisting them wearing their sport uniform.

COVID Classroom Update - Due to ongoing restrictions and general COVID19 awareness, we have set up our classrooms to ensure the safety of all. When entering the class please enter through the wet area, where you can wash your hands. This will become a requirement and a routine for anybody entering the class. In line with Government mandates people over 12 will need to wear a mask when entering the classrooms and scan in using the Safe WA QR code on the wet room windows. Please note there are two difference codes, one for 6H and one for 6M. At this point, students are not required but are more than welcome to wear masks indoors, especially if this makes them feel more comfortable. There was an email sent yesterday from the main office with more information please refer to that if you have any other questions.

Swimming Lessons - As you may be already aware swimming lessons this year will take place on the first two weeks of school starting Wednesday the 2nd of February. The Year 6 swimming lessons will commence at 9am on the beach. We will be departing the school by by bus at 8.45am at the latest. To ensure that this runs smoothly, your child will need to arrive to school on time.
Please support your child to ensure they come to school ready for swimming.  Children can wear bathers and rashies under their sport uniform, but please ensure that they have sunscreen on before arriving to school as we will not have time to apply before arriving at the beach. We will take extra sunscreen to the beach in case. Students will need to wear their enclosed sport shoes to school and bring their thongs with them. They can change as soon as they arrive to school. We will arrive back at school after swimming lessons at approx 10.10am. Please ensure that all clothing and equipment including googles are appropriately labelled to avoid the inevitable 'lost equipment'.

Book Orders - If you can please make sure that you have unpacked and labelled all items as necessary, we would be very appreciative. I will support your child as required with putting their items into their drawers and necessary storage tubs.

Exercise and Scrap Books – Please make sure that you have purchased the given number of exercise and scrap books stated on the book list.  Over the year the students exercise books may become quite worn out, but we have found that clear plastic book covers help minimise this (please see image below for example - these can be found at Kmart, Officeworks, BigW and Callows).

Exercise books should be clearly labelled with your child’s name, but please do not worry about filling in subject areas as they can be reused for the next year if they don't need them and we will providing subject covers for easy identification of books. Spare exercise books will be kept in the classroom for your child throughout the year.

Stationery Items – Your child will have their own pencil case. We ask that all items are labelled with your child’s name, can we please be mindful of the number and size of the pencil cases that your child brings, as their tray capacity is limited. Please stock their pencil case with the book list items. Any spare stationary will be kept in the classroom in a labelled Ziploc bag with your child's name on it for your child to access when required throughout the year. This is to prevent the amount of borrowing that takes place interrupting other students learning.

Term 1 Timetable - Please see below picture of our current swimming class timetable for 6H starting Monday. There will be changes to this timetable in week 3 when swimming lessons ends. I will post the next timetable then.

Uniform – Please check in with the school website for the summer uniform policy and make sure that your child adheres to our guidelines. Both boys and girls must have their hair off their face and tied up if it falls below their collar.  Please note that during swimming lessons, students wear their full sports uniform every day.

First Day – there may be some nerves coming in on the first day. If your child is feeling a little nervous, this is perfectly normal…we are too!

Your child will see that they have been allocated a seat and a drawer within the classroom. As they come in, we ask that they bring in their bags to unpack, find their seat and then put their belongings in their drawer.

There is a home for their water bottles, and they are to keep their Crunch n Sip on their desks with their pencil cases. They will be directed to the whiteboard with reminders on what to do after that.

Gathering Time - class is open from 8.30am. If you can endeavor to get your child to class on time it helps to feel settled and organised for the day.

This is an important time of the day for us to connect with the students and help get them set up for the day. It can be tricky for us to give you our full attention on occasion, so if you need to speak with either of us, please come in a few minutes beforehand or send us an email.

Homework - OLC is continuing to follow the Ian Lilico homework grid. More information will follow in coming weeks and please note that homework will be fortnightly. For the first two weeks of school we will get the students to fill in a questionnaire about themselves to help us get to know them. This will be due the end of week 2. After swimming lessons we will move to a more structured format for homework. The students will also have diaries to help prepare them for High School and increase and improve their organisation skills. This will be sent out when they arrive.

Interviews - If you need to set up a time to share any important information about your child, please email me directly to organise a time to meet. Please note their will be a parent night held in week 3.
We have received a very thorough handover from your child's previous teacher which highlights their brilliance and strengths and informs us of any areas to be aware of.
You can contact me directly via email at sean.mcsevich@cewa.edu.au
Please bear in mind that I am teaching throughout the day and don't always have access to my emails, so if it is anything of importance please contact me the night before or contact the office.

Year 6 Collaboration - I am very excited to be collaborating with the Miss Hurst in Year 6. Please note we will be doing a teacher swap of classes for Science and HASS at this stage and will share relevant information with each other as necessary. We also come together on a regular basis for Literacy, Math as well as working together in Art, Health and Religion. Therefore, if your child has friends in the other classroom please let them know there is a strong chance they will be together quite frequently in a school day as well as recess and lunch.

Class Blog - This blog will be the main communication for any parent information over the coming year.  Please keep your mobile and email updated with the front office to ensure you receive texts and email communication from us throughout the year. Once the students are settled and we have completed our swimming lessons, the class blog becomes a student task in Year 6. This is to promote their use of digital technologies and is a great leadership tool that prepares them for High School. You will receive the name of the students that wrote the blog when you receive the text. So watch this space!!!!

Enjoy the last weekend of holidays and I am  to see you all on Monday!

Thanks for your ongoing support

Sean McSevich
