Week 1 & 2 Term 2

 KAYA,

Welcome back to Term 2, we are so excited for what lies ahead for our wonderful 6M family. πŸ™Œ We are excited to get stuck into Term 2 and continue to watch the students flourish and grow in their leadership roles in Year 6. We will have a busy term with lots of sporting events including OLC's cross country and the Winter Sport Carnival. We will have lots of exciting new projects and learning ahead too, including; persuasive writing and debating, fractions and decimal exploration and Minecraft challenges and coding.

We wish you a peaceful Anzac Day on Tuesday however you may spend the day remembering those who were impacted and lost. Lest We Forget.

Term 1 Week 9 and 10 God Moments for Year 6:
Our Year 6 family photo for Father Ian's farewell gift.

OLC band performing in the morning, what a way to start the day.

Watching the 6H family perform a brain break dance routine.

Lastly, saying a massive goodbye and farewell to absolute champ, Cameron Hunt. Cam, we all wish you the very best of luck for your next chapter.

Character Strengths:
Parents, this week we are looking at developing the character strength of Humility. St. Theresa of Calcutta (Mother Teresa) was known for devoting her life to caring for the sick and the poor in Calcutta, India. Even though she is considered one of the greatest humanitarians and was awarded a Noble Peace Prize, she still valued humility and said, “if you are humble nothing will touch you, either praise neither disgrace, because you know what you are.”
Do you let your accomplishments speak for themselves?
Do you know deep down what you do well?

Homework NEW CHANGES!!:
We are now moving to a weekly homework routine in preparation for increasing the amount of homework to prepare the students for their transition to high school. The homework will be provided to the students on the first Monday of the week and it will be due the following Monday. Leaving the students to have the weekend to finish off any work they haven't completed throughout the week.
  • Times table activity booklet
  • Reading (30 minutes per day - to be logged in the student diary in the designated side section)
  • 1 x sheet of mental math
  • Math Tracker Assessment Study Activities - OneNote - NEW!!
Please ensure that your child writes their daily reading into their homework diaries and that it is signed by an adult before it returns each Monday.

NEW Math's Study - OneNote
As part of our endeavour to help the students with their transition to high school, we will be adding a new study component to the homework expectations. Each week we will upload into OneNote under the student's Math's Folder, all the Math's weekly activities completed during the Measurement (Monday & Tuesday) and Number (Wednesday - Friday) lessons.

The students are expected to refer to these activities at home during the week and complete them at their own discretion, depending on their understanding of the concept in class. This study will assist with the Tracker assessments completed each fortnight, where their result will posted onto Seesaw for you to see firstly, how they went and secondly, if they should be doing more study at home.

We will be talking to the students about the importance of organising their time around their commitments to ensure they are completing enough homework and study to ensure their results are improving. This skill is something that needs to be developed before high school, as we know that the schools the students will go to, do something similar in some capacity. We will NOT be marking this work, however we are always here for any queries or questions the students have. It is something we want the students to take initiative with as it will be expected of them next year. We ask that you support us with this new initiative.

Health Project DUE SOON:
The students were given a group project to complete last term and over the holidays. Originally this was due on Monday 1st May (6H) and Tuesday 2nd May (6M) of Week 2 this term, however I have extended it to being DUE Monday 8th May and Tuesday 9th May as I would like to see the students progress before they present it. The homework for week 1 will focus primarily on the Health Project and completing the recipe and script that is required before I see them in week 2.

Below is the checklist and rubric given to the students describing the group task and what they have to complete in their groups (click on the links below):

Expectations & Consequences
To help prepare the students for high school, we feel it is time to increase our expectations and as a result our consequences for those expectations not being met. We will be expecting our leaders to step up in general, however the following areas are those that we will be focusing on in particular at the start of this term:
  1. Consistent with the school IT policy, if laptops are not fully charged for use within the school day they will receive an infringement notice which gets sent to admin and parents. If this continually occurs then the students personal time, such as recess and lunch will be taken away from them.
  2. If students do not complete or return their homework, an email will be sent home notifying the parents. If this becomes a regular offence, the students will spend their recess and lunches to complete the weekly homework from scratch.
  3. As you are aware the students participate in Leadership Roles each week.  We have decided that participation in these roles is not a given, it is something they need to earn. Therefore, if students are consistently not demonstrating correct leadership behaviours throughout the week they will not participate in their Leadership roles on the Friday afternoon. Instead during the designated time, they will be in class writing about the school value/s that they chose to break and this will be sent home to parents that afternoon.
  4. Lastly, as discussed earlier this year, if students are not completing work in class, this will be sent home to be completed that night and is expected to be returned (completed) the next day.
We noticed a few undesirable habits starting to appear at the end of last term and are hoping that by introducing these measures we will continue to see our leaders flourish and be role models to those in junior year levels.
