Term 4 week 3

Good afternoon and welcome to week 3!!!

This week in class we finished working with the order of operations in math and are building on this through our algebra unit of work and will be continuing with angles in measurement.

In writing we are finalising our 'I'm an expert' procedures and will be reflecting on how we went with these.  The students have been advised that they will need to bring to school the items they need to allow another person try and complete their procedure. Please support your child to bring in the items they need to complete their procedure for Thursday this week.

We are also starting our book club, so your children will be bringing their books home to read during the week.  As part of this, the students will be given a role to complete in-class activities on the reading that has been set.

PAT Testing
Over the next two weeks we will begin our series of formal PAT assessments which will help further inform our understanding of your child's learning needs, as well as guide groupings within the classroom and our end of year reports. Please support your child to ensure that their laptops are fully charged every day for the next two weeks as these tests are computer based. They do not need to prepare for these in any way, however it is important that they get a good night's rest each day to ensure they are refreshed and ready.

Monday - Reading Test
Wednesday- Spelling
Thursday - Math
Friday - Vocabulary

Book Club
This term we will be introducing the students to a new novel study during book club. Book club will involve the students being independent and working with their peers to complete an in depth novel study. Students will be allocated one book from the awesome texts seen below. They will then work in a group of 5-8 students. Each week the students will be responsible for reading allocated pages for homework, they will also be responsible for completing one role a week. The roles are listed below. We have been practicing each role in class over the past two weeks as we finished our whole class novel "We are Wolves". The students will present their role and discuss the chapters with their book club every Friday. The students are allowed to bring popcorn for this book club to share with their peers as they discuss the literature.

Book Club Roles
The Summariser - will summarise one of the chapters that they read for the week. They will focus on the 'who, what, where, when and why' to help them retell the main events.

The Director - will compose four questions to discuss during the Book Club Meeting. These questions will use ideas from the novel, they most be open questions not closed. The director is also in charge of checking in with all students in their book club and hosting the book club on a Friday.

The Word Finder - will find a minimum of five interesting or unusual words from the text. They then use these words to complete a dictionary meaning, the sentence that the word was in and another sentence using the word in the same context.

The Illustrator - will create an illustration from a scene in the book. There objective is to use as much detail and colour as possible so that their group members can pick the scene without reading the caption.

The Connector - will try and make a 'text to text', a 'text to self' and a 'text to world' connection from the required pages for that week. The most important part of making a connection is writing down how that connection helps you create a deeper understand of the novel. This could include a deeper understanding of the setting or the character's feelings.

Upcoming events

Tuesday - Swimming Trials
On Tuesday, we will be attending time trials at the swimming pool with years 4-6 at the Geographe Leisure Centre.
