Week 5

 KAYA,

Welcome to week 5....the half way point!
It has been a busy week, the students have been working very hard and are really embracing their leadership roles. We are about to switch our ministry duties to try some new jobs for the remainder of the term.
Miss Hurst and I have are starting our preparations for Camp in Term 3. The students will also start their preparations this week and for the Human Development workshop in week 8

A massive thank you to Lauren Heitman who baked the marvelous cupcakes for the students when they received their Confirmation certificates. 🧁🕊💕

Dance for Sick Children
On Monday morning of this week from 8.50am-9.40am, Ellie Haines our wonderful dance teacher will be holding a full School K-6 Dance Class in the Hall for the Dance for Sick Kids Fundraiser. Students will need to bring a gold coin donation tomorrow and wear their sport uniform. All money raised goes to the Ronald McDonald House Charity. If you would like to donate online please follow the below link:

Year 6 Camp

Thankfully, the Year 6 camp is back on (Yipee)! It will be held in week 2 Term 3, in Waroona! We will depart the school on Wednesday the 27th of July and will return on Friday the 29th of July. The cost for camp will be approx $350 per student including food, travel and activities. We will be in touch when we have the exact cost and will advise when we will be collecting this. The students will also bring a letter home that will request information on diet and health, any medications, dietary adjustments and important information to be noted. A massive thank you to all those parents who have offered help and support on camp however, we have all the parent support that we need.

Benefits of Camp:
All children learn from the unique experience of community living; sharing, working and living as a team. Being inter-dependent with peers affords the child an opportunity to make new friends, to view each other out of the context of school, and to witness and appreciate the different talents of others. School camps expose children to different environments that they would not normally experience in daily living. Out of this they build personal competencies such as self-identity, self-worth, self-esteem, leadership and self-respect.

Camps also help develop self esteem as children learn to try different activities in a supportive and friendly environment. Trained, Outdoor Instructors help children feel secure, capable and included in a professional manner. This will help children grow by providing a supervised, positive environment that has safety as a primary commitment.

Students participate in activities they have never experienced before and are rewarded with a sense of accomplishment and self worth. Camp is therefore a wonderful experience especially for the timid or overly dependent child. Children learn new skills, and develop a sense of autonomy and trust in their decision.

Camp Homework:
As part of the preparations for camp, the students will have to complete 'camp homework' on seesaw each week. This will start in week 6 and involve camp tasks such as setting the table, clearing the table and washing the dishes, making their bed in the morning, being able to pack and repack their camp bag and sleeping bag. These tasks will be set on Seesaw and will need to be videoed and uploaded before the Friday of that week. These tasks will be a lot of fun but also help your child successfully prepare for time on camp.

Aboriginal Garden Maintenance

The students worked so hard last week to undertake some much needed maintenance on the Indigenous Garden.  This formed part of our learning on Laudato si, caring for the earth. We got to see some real resilience, teamwork and hard work. Well done 6H and 6M.

Human Development
On Thursday of week 8 the students will participate in Human Development talks that will be presented by The Centre for Life, Marriage and Family. They will cover an introductory program on growth and development with the Year 6 students via zoom.

A permission slip was sent home last week that must be completed and returned by the end of week 5 for your child to participate. Thanks you to everyone who already has their back to me.  Should we not receive a complete form, we will assume your child is not participating and will be sent to another classroom.

We have already started discussion in class on hygiene and hygiene products as a lead in to puberty. One area we discussed in length was deodorant, the students may have come home and asked more about this. This week we will be discussing safe places to look for information on puberty including talking to family, talking to teachers, talking to health professionals, etc. This is something you may also like to start discussing at home over the upcoming weeks.

Vinnie's Winter Appeal
Hi everyone, you have probably heard about the St Vincent de Paul Winter Appeal. This is a program that helps people that are less fortunate than us going into winter to stay warm. We are collecting any warm clothes and blankets that you are not using. There will be a box at the front office you can put your items by the end of tomorrow. Any questions please direct to Xavier Armstrong in 6H.

I hope you have a wonderful week, please do not hesitate to contact me should you have any questions.

Thanks for your ongoing support

Mr Mc
