Term 2, Weeks 5 and 6

  KAYA,

Welcome to week 5, half way through this term already!

It was great to see so many people out supporting our wonderful community and school at the OLC v DPS soccer event on Friday night!  Unfortunately, we didn't come away with a win, but it was lots of fun!

Over the past week we have been exploring persuasive devices in more detail, so don't be surprised if your child is being a little more persuasive than usual.  In the coming weeks we will be using this knowledge of language devices in our own persuasive texts.

In Maths, we have been working on equivalent fractions and are now applying this knowledge in adding and subtracting fractions to solve problems.  We are also exploring the likelihood and the probability of events occurring. The students are learning how to use fractions, decimals and percentages to describe the probability, not just words such as impossible, likely, certain, etc.

Making Jesus Real:
My God moments over the last two weeks included watching the students give in to meditation through the patient and calm guidance of Mrs Starr, thank you Heather for delivering a peaceful and calm escape on a Wednesday for the past two weeks. We are all so grateful for your time and energy. πŸ™Œ

My last God moment was seeing the joy Wilco brought to Jay during Friday's assembly. πŸΆπŸ• Thank you Wilco for always bringing a smile to our face on Friday.

A Note from Mrs Haines regarding Dance for Term 2:
DANCE CONCERT- FRIDAY, 16TH JUNE WEEK 8 STARTING TIME: 11AM

Hello Families,
If you are planning to be away at all this Term and/or away for the Dance Concert, can you please email me, ellie.haines@cewa.edu.au so I can plan accordingly. I only get to see your children for 1 hour a week and have had a lot of students telling me that they will be away this term/for the concert etc but need confirmation from parents please.

Thank you- Mrs Haines

IMPORTANT: Rube Goldberg Machines - Due this week
We are getting very excited and looking forward to seeing all the Rube Goldberg Machines that the Year 6's have been working on.  Since setting the project in week 2, the students have viewed several examples from last year, discussed expectations, options and how to problem solve.  They have also been reminded about this being due in week 5 and that the purpose of this project is to have a bit of fun exploring forces and the transfer of force from one object to another.  The few that we have seen over the past week have been fabulous!

Homework - Due on Monday:
Please remind your child that their homework is due tomorrow. Please advise them to bring their diary and for it to be signed.

Year 5/6 Leadership Day TOMORROW!!
Our Year 6 students will be very fortunate to attend a special Leadership day in the hall tomorrow the 22nd of May. The wonderful Mrs Meyer has arranged for the students to have an inspirational speaker for the day. This event has been supported by the P&F. This will be a whole day presentation and the students will be required to wear their sports uniform please. This is a wonderful privilege for our students and will hopefully aid in the students becoming the best leaders they can be.

The students are able to wear their sports uniform for this.

Red Cross Incursion - Year 6 students ONLY - Thursday 25th May
Australian Red Cross will be delivering an interactive and informative incursion for the Year 6 class(es) this week on Thursday the 25th. This will teach the students about refugees and people seeking asylum around the world and in Australia. During the In Search of Safety program students will have the chance to imagine what it would be like to flee their homes quickly through an engaging simulation, and to hear from children their age about their experiences of seeking safety. This will be a great opportunity for the students to learn about human rights, why people need protection and they will all be given an activity to practice humanitarianism at home, this will involve the students quizzing their family and friends to spread the knowledge they have learnt during the incursion. Furthermore, students who complete the activity earn a Red Cross Young Humanitarian Award, when this is completed.

Minecraft Group Project - Due week 6 for Feedback, Due week 7 for Presenting
As you may be aware, we have all become master builders in Technologies in Year 6. The students were given a group project to create a sustainable community inside Minecraft that connects with and addresses some of the key points the Pope addressed in his letter Laudato Si. Laudato Si has been Pope Francis's most comprehensive Vatican document to date on environmentalism, ethics, and Christian faith. The students have learned about Laudato Si in Religion and created either a role-play, poster or drawing that showed the importance of this document. Some of these posters you can still see around the school. The students have then been tasked with creating a world in Minecraft. This is a CEWA based compeition as well as a project with marks for technologies. The students have a rubric and document in OneNote that will guide them through the stages they need to complete. Only 5 entries from OLC are allowed to enter the competition however, all groups will present their ideas, designs and finished worlds to the class for marks. The students will be applying their knowledge and understanding of the Engineering Design Process which they learned in Term 1 in technologies to create their Minecraft World and presentation. On Thursday, week 3 the students were able to participate with other schools around WA in an online teams forum with a project and specialist coordinator from Minecraft. During this session, the students were advised to ask questions.

Health Cooking Presentations:
The students did an impressive job on their cooking presentations, you should be very proud of your mini master chefs! The majority of the students were so organised and worked together as a team flawlessly. Their culinary skills were on full display and it was amazing to see.

The way they planned and prepared for the presentations showed great collaboration and commitment among themselves. Everything ran smoothly, and even when their were some minor hiccups, they problem-solved like true champions! It was evident that they put a lot of effort into making sure everything was set up perfectly.

I am currently marking and uploading these projects onto Seesaw as we speak. All results will be completed very soon. You may have seen it already come home, however I have made a little cookbook with all the recipes for you to add to your repertoire at home. If you haven't seen it yet...it could be still lurking in their bags! Here are some pics of our mini master chefs in action:)

Character Strengths:
Parents, this week we are looking at developing the character strength of Leadership.
St Joan of Arc is said to have heard the voices of angels and saints. She heard their messages and helped the king of France to win many battles and eventually his war through her leadership and insight.
• Do you help groups to get things done?
• Do you help others achieve goals?
